The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) defines a Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS) as an activity that is planned to have
- A series with multiple sessions that
- Occur on an ongoing basis (offered weekly, monthly, or quarterly) and
- Are primarily planned by and presented to the accredited organization’s professional staff but could be shared with online audience, if appropriate.
All Regularly Scheduled Series are expected to be planned, implemented and evaluated in accordance with the ACCME Essential Areas and Elements, (including the 2006 Updated Standards for Commercial Support) and Accreditation Policies.
Any RSS seeking to apply for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (TM) must appoint a RSS Activity Director and a RSS Administrative Liaison who are required to complete an annual application. The application form, along with the requested documentation, must be submitted to Wendy Murphy in the Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences (CCEHS) by early November for approval effective January 1st of the following year.
All RSS must be designed to make a change in clinical competence (strategy), performance, or patient outcomes of the learners. They must also be designed to measure for a change in clinical competence (strategy), performance, or patient outcomes.
In order to apply for accreditation for a Regularly Scheduled Series this specific process must be followed:
- Review the Responsibilities of RSS Activity Director and RSSAL (PDF)
- Review the below RSS Application Process that outlines the documentation that MUST be submitted with the RSS CME Application and Planning Worksheets. The types of documentation that must be submitted are:
- Conflict of Interest Disclosure Forms for:
- Each member of the planning committee
- All identified speakers to date for traditional single lecturer programs or all of regular attendees (core group) at case discussion type programs.
- Representative data showing needs assessment methods
- Proposed annual activity schedule (including speaker name & talk title or list of potential topics to be covered during the year).
- Sample activity promotional material to include:
- DHMC Accreditation Statement
- DHMC Credit Designation Statement
- Overall RSS learning objectives (from application)
- Target Audience
- Statement referencing Commercial Support Sponsor (if applicable)
- Sample sign-in/attendance sheet (see templates to use)
- Projected budget
- Conflict of Interest Disclosure Forms for:
- Complete the online learning module (30 minutes) offered by the National Faculty Education Initiative by following these simple instructions:

- Register for the web site by clicking the "New User? Register Now" link under the login boxes
- Participate in the online learning module entitled "Faculty Roles and Responsibilities in Certified Continuing Medical Education and FDA Regulated Promotional Activities: There Is a Difference"
- Complete the case study.
- You will be issued a Certificate of Completion.
- The CME Dean and Directors will be able to verify your completion.
- If this process is not completed in the timeframe specified accreditation will be withheld until application is approved.

For All RSS:
For Case Programs (A RSS that has a core group of people that attend each time and use a discussion format are considered to be a "case" RSS.) For Traditional Programs (A RSS that has a different speaker each week is considered to be a "traditional" RSS.)
