Barry Smith, MD
After an internship at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, he did a five-year residency at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. He returned to Dartmouth after two years in the Navy.
In 1970, Dr. Smith introduced gynecologic laparoscopy at Dartmouth. Laparoscopic surgery became a large portion of his clinical practice. He enjoyed a large clinical practice and considered patient care to be the most enjoyable part of his career.
Dr. Smith became involved in the Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic and Medical Center administrative activities, and was named Section Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Maternal and Child Health, in 1977. He went on to become department chair of the newly formed Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1993.
Dr. Smith's accomplishments include developing subspecialty care and a residency program in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; development of quality programs with the Foundation for Healthy Communities in New Hampshire and the Vermont Program for Quality In Healthcare; and serving as a section and then a district officer in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Throughout his career, he has participated in quality improvement groups locally, regionally and nationally. Some of his activities include working with the NH Perinatal Addiction Task Force; serving as a steering committee member and site reviewer for the Vermont Program for Quality in Health Care; and leading the Foundation for Healthy Communities' four-year patient-centered outcomes project.
Currently, he is a member of the New Hampshire Medical Society Executive Council and a trustee of the Hitchcock Foundation. He serves on two national committees: the ABOG/ACOG Road to Maintaining Excellence Task Force and the ACOG Oversight Committee on Pay for Performance.
