Cardiothoracic Surgical Physician Assistant Post-Graduate Residency

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Cardiothoracic Surgical Physician Assistant postgraduate residency is an intensive 12-month advanced training program. Your training will be comprised of didactic and clinical curriculums that will occur concomitantly. Our program will provide you with a solid foundation in the diagnosis and management of conditions common to cardiothoracic surgery patients and will include a robust intraoperative experience.

Cardiothoracic Surgical Physician Assistant post-graduate residency

Note: The Physician Assistant residency program has been created in accordance with the published Accreditation Standards for Clinical Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), with anticipation of accreditation.

Upon completion of the program, our residents will have the skills to triage, evaluate, treat and manage cardiac and thoracic problems, and be an independent first-assistant in the operating room. They will master various techniques of conduit harvesting and preparation. In addition, our residents will have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to manage patients with Coronary Artery Disease, Aortic Valve Disease, Mitral Valve Disease, Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Aortic Aneurysm, Lung and Esophageal Cancer, Thoracic Disease and Thoracic Trauma.

The goal of the program is to help you grow and develop the surgical, medical, and critical thinking skills required to build a successful career in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Credential awarded

Certificate of completion issued by Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. Signed by the Medical Director, Program Director, and participating faculty.

Financial information

Physician Assistants Residents will be paid a competitive stipend and are eligible for full and comprehensive benefits provided by Dartmouth-Hitchcock. The residency program provides educational materials including protective loupes, lab coats, textbooks, handouts, internet access while in a Dartmouth-Hitchcock facility.

Category 1 CME is available for free by participating and attending lectures, conferences, grand rounds, journal club.
