Program description

Our pharmacy residency in critical care is a 12-month, full-time, post graduate year two (PGY2) training program. The critical care pharmacy residency will expose you to challenging and diverse patient populations across multiple ICU settings.

The primary goals of the DHMC PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program are to:

  • Incorporate you as part of a multidisciplinary team to improve care of ICU patients
  • Offer a diverse amount of experiences, allowing you to gain exposure to a variety of traditional and non-traditional critical care settings
  • Prepare you to enter the workforce as a clinical specialist, faculty member, or in a leadership role
  • Offer a flexible program, allowing you to explore individual interest areas
  • Prepare you to take BCCCP upon graduation from the program

Required rotations

  • Cardiology/Cardiovascular Critical Care
  • Infectious Disease
  • Medical ICU (2 months)
  • Nutrition (2 weeks)
  • Orientation
  • Surgical ICU
  • Trauma ICU (2 months)

Elective rotations

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Heart Failure Consult Team
  • Hematology/Oncology (2 or 4 weeks)
  • Medical ICU- Associate Provider Team
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Pediatric ICU
  • Repeat of any core rotation
  • Other opportunities may be available based on individual interests

  • Longitudinal Research Project
  • Medication Use Evaluation (6 months)
  • Practice Management
  • Precepting/Multidisciplinary Education
  • Staffing

Additional responsibilities

In addition to the below activities, you will also participate in code blue response, PGY1 residents and student precepting, as well as additional multidisciplinary educational opportunities throughout the year.

Longitudinal Research Project

You will complete one longitudinal research project throughout the residency year. This project may be original research or a development/enhancement of pharmacy services. Completed results will be presented as a poster presentation at the Eastern States Residency Conference in May. Also, you will complete a manuscript suitable for publication.

Medication Use Evaluation

You will complete one medication usage evaluation during the first half of the residency year. You will present their completed MUE results at ASHP Midyear/Vizient meetings via a poster presentation.

Continuing Education

You will present one ACPE Accredited seminar during their residency year. The topic should surround a controversial critical care topic, new medication, or guideline update.

Staffing

You will participate in both critical care and wide institutional staffing while at DHMC. You will be expected to staff two decentralized swing shifts (1:30 to 10:00 pm) in the ICU per month. You will also staff one weekend per month. Also, you will staff one hospital-observed summer holiday and one hospital-observed winter holiday.

Teaching Certificate

If you have not received a teaching certificate via your PGY1 pharmacy residency program, you will have an opportunity to participate in a teaching certificate program. We determine the provider of the teaching certificate program on a yearly basis. You are not required to participate in this program.

Benefits

Stipend: $50,000

Earned time: 10 days plus four institutional holidays
